To commemorate Black History Month, students will be learning about the Tuskegee Airmen and the important contributions of African Americans who helped change the course of history.

Important Dates to Remember: 

Toys for Tots Drive - Mrs. Ness and grade 5 are currently sponsoring a Toys for Tots collection for less fortunate children who may not otherwise receive any presents this Christmas. 

December 8th - Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a holy day of obligation. Grades 1 through 8 will attend the 9:00 Mass. This is a full day of school and children are to be in complete winter uniform.

December 9th - Our annual Christmas Boutique will take place. More details will follow.

December 16th - We are thrilled that our Home School Association will once again be sponsoring our Christmas Tree lighting and pictures with Santa along with other fun activities.

December 16th - Due to our faculty Christmas celebration, there will be no After School Program in session on this day.

December 21st - Our annual Christmas Show in person will begin promptly at 6:30 pm. More information regarding advance ticket purchases will follow in the coming days.

December 22nd - Half Day for all grades. Kindergarten through grade 8 will dismiss at 12 Noon. There will be no After School Program in session. This will be a free dress down day for Kindergarten through grade 8. Christmas colors are encouraged.

A glance into what our students are learning in fourth grade....

For English Language Arts/Writing, the fourth graders are in the process of  publishing their very own Halloween stories. Students are utilizing the steps in the writing process to create their own Halloween stories.

In Math, students are learning how to utilize the standard algorithm and place value to add multi-digit numbers. 

In Religion, students will learn how to compose their own genre painting by drawing a scene from the life of Saint John Vianney. 

In Science, the fourth graders will be learning about the four major types of skeletons, and compare the different types utilizing the information presented in the informational text.

Thursday, October 20th - No School due to a Spiritual Conference Day at Iona University.

For English Language Arts/Writing, the fourth graders are currently working on their Halloween stories. Students are utilizing the steps in the writing process to create their own Halloween stories. They are excited to create their own stories. 

In Science, the students are learning about why leaves change color during the fall season. Students were asked to write an essay describing what they liked about autumn where they live, and what other things they liked about autumn. The fourth graders shared their wonderful writing pieces with their classmates. 

In Math, the students are learning how to add and subtract whole numbers mentally using a variety of methods (compensation, counting up, and breaking apart). 

In Religion, the students are learning about the different kinds of sin that exist in the world. The fourth graders are also called to value and respect all people, and to treat other people with respect. 

The students are very excited about their upcoming trip to Green Meadows Pumpkin Patch on October 28th! 










REMINDER: We will have a Dress Down Day this Thursday for the Feast of Saint Gabriel. We are also seeking a donation of at least $1.00 to aid the people of Puerto Rico. Please donate whatever your means allowed. It will be greatly appreciated. 

UPDATE: The Green Meadows Pumpkin Patch at Alley Park Field Trip permission slips and money must be returned by Friday, October 14th. All permission slips and money must be in a labeled envelope with your child's name and grade. Chaperones will be notified via email.

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

I hope you and your children had a wonderful summer vacation and
are ready to begin the new school year at Saint Gabriel School.

Important Dates to Remember: 

Wednesday, September 7th is a half day of school. Students are expected to be on line by 7:55 am.  Dismissal will be at 12:00 pm.  Your child may bring in a snack.

Thursday and Friday will be full days of school.  Students must bring their lunches to school. All drinks and liquids should be in aluminum cans or plastic bottles. Glass bottles are not allowed in school. Dismissal will be at 2:45 pm. 

Please make sure your child arrives to school on Wednesday, September 7th with the necessary school supplies and his/her summer
reading and math assignment. Please also make sure your child has an assignment pad to write his/her daily homework. Assignment pads can be purchased in the school office from Mrs. Daly.  Students must have an assignment pad by Friday, September 9th. 

Summer uniforms may be worn through Friday, October 7th.

There will be a free Dress Down Day on Friday, April 1st. 

In honor of Women's History Month, the fourth graders studied the lives of famous women in history who made a difference. Students conducted their research utiizing various online websites and wrote a research paper. Students also drew pictures of the women they researched. Their beautiful work is proudly displayed in our classroom and in the hallway. 

The fourth graders will be learning about the Stations of the Cross. They will view a video of the Stations of the Cross, choose one station, and illustrate and color the station they chose. Students will include a written description of the meaning of the Station of the Cross and why they chose the station.

The fourth graders are currently preparing for the Math State Exam which will be administered in April. The fourth graders are currently learning about equivalent fractions. The students will also be learning about angles, drawing and identifying lines and angles, and measuring angles in degree using a protractor.

March 2^nd- Ash Wednesday begins the liturgical season of Lent, a season of prayer and sacrifice in our Catholic faith.  Grades 3-8 will attend the 9:00 Mass and  baptized Catholic students will receive Ashes on this day as we begin to follow our Lord’s journey to the Cross, the ultimate sacrifice for mankind. 

March 4^th- PM Faculty Conference - Half Day for Kindergarten through grade 8. $1.00 Dress Down Day. No After School Program

March 5^th – First Penance  at 12 noon for our students preparing for First Holy Communion.

February is Black History Month. The fourth graders will celebrate Black History Month by viewing famous quotes by Martin Luther King Jr. Students will choose one of Martin Luther King's famous quotes and create a picture or a one page comic strip inspired by one of King's quotes. Students will then engage in an art activity identifying the quote, what the quote means to them, and how their art reflects the quote. 

This week is Catholic Schools Week. The fourth graders were hard at work creating their very own posters promoting Saint Gabriel's School. The students were very enthusiastic and excited about working on their projects. So proud of them! They created amazing posters. View their beautiful art work and the finished products below.

                                              Winter MAP Test                                                                                                 

The fourth graders will be taking Round Two of the MAP Assessments in Reading, Math, and Language Arts. The MAP Test will be administered in-person and is completely online. The data collected from the MAP Test will allow teachers to find out what each student knows and what they are ready to learn next. The results of the data (the RIT score) is not a grade and will not appear on your child's report card, nor be used as a basis for promotion/retention. Family reports will be available after all testing is complete. We will begin testing this Tuesday, January 11th and continue testing until Tuesday, January 18th. We will not be testing during Art, Gym, Spanish, Music, or lunchtime. This is a tentative schedule. The testing schedule is subject to change.

Please make sure your child has the appropriate tools for MAP testing - namely several pre-sharpened number 2 pencils and one package of loose leaf paper. Please make sure these supplies are on hand for Tuesday.

Important Dates to Remember:

So that our school community may safely experience the joy of the Advent/ Christmas Season, we look forward to our Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony which will take place on December 10th at 5:00 pm.

$ 1.00 December Dress Down Fridays - Beginning this Friday, December 3rd, all students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 may tastefully dress down each Friday for $1.00 to be paid each Friday. This will be a fun way to build morale and support the school with this very much needed fundraiser, especially with all the technology initiatives currently in place, along with the sky rocketing costs of paper, duplicating machines, and toner.

The fourth graders finished writing their personal narratives. They learned and utilized the steps of the writing process. 

In honor of All Saint's Day, the students learned about the lives of many different saints. The students researched a saint, wrote a paragraph about the saint they researched, and included why we honor the saint. 

In honor of Veteran's Day, the students joined Discovery Education on a unique virtual journey that inspires student agency through the lens of military service.
The virtual field trip entitled Why We Serve was hosted by students. The virtual field trip featured personal stories from well known United States military veterans, community service providers, and civic leaders. Students were inspired to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave U.S. military service members and the impact it has on our country. Students wrote a reflection on the virtual field trip and reflected on how they can be of service to their communities.

In Math, we are learning how to constuct arguments utilizing what we know about place-value relationships. 

In Religion, we are learning about the Beatitudes and how we can live out the Beatitudes in our daily lives. In addition, students completed an art/writing project on the Beatitudes.

In Grammar, we are learning about sentences and sentence fragments.

We are currently working on daily writing prompts. This week's genre focuses on creative writing - fantasy. Upon completion, the students love to share their creative writing pieces with their class.

Wednesday, September 8th is the first day of school. It is a half day. Arrival time is 7:45 am. Dismissal time is 11:20 am. Thursday, September 9th and Friday, September 10th are full days. Dismissal for Thursday and Friday will be 2:20 pm. Since arrival and dismissal times are staggered during Phase One, arrival time is 7:45 am and dismissal time is 2:20 pm every day, unless indicated otherwise on the school calendar. 

Please also make sure your child arrives to school on Wednesday with the necessary school supplies and his/her summer reading assignment. The supply list and the summer reading assignment has been previously posted on class pages in June. Please see below for further reference.

The fourth grade rockstars are currently participating in the Catapult/Title 1 Group Guidance session via zoom every Friday for six sessions. Our goal is to continue to maintain the emotional health and well being of our school community.

On the academic front in Religion, the students chose one Spiritual Work of Mercy, illustrated how they live out the Work of Mercy chosen in their daily lives, and wrote a brief description of their drawings. In Science/ELA, the students are learning about the external structures and functions of animals. In Social Studies/ELA, the students are learning about the first explorers.

Parents of NYC students who attend an Archdiocese of New York Catholic School can enroll them in this FREE Extended Learning Day program for students in grades K-8 created to supplement each student’s learning experience.

Due to the unique circumstances of this school year, the program will take place in small groups after school or on Saturdays through remote learning. Sessions are designed to include a holistic experience for students composed of targeted math and literacy instruction as well as STEM and SEL activities to encourage personal growth in a collaborative virtual classroom.

Parents have the option of choosing one of the following:

• • Two 100 minute sessions after school
• OR
• • One 200 minute session on Saturdays

This opportunity is made available to all K-8 NYC ADNY students thanks to Title I and Title IV funding, along with grants and generous donors.

A great big thank you from the bottom of my heart for the very generous money gift given to me for Christmas from the fourth grade parents. Many many thanks to my fourth grade rockstars for their beautiful, lovely, and generous Christmas gifts. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity is so appreciated by me. Thank you again for remembering me during the Christmas season.

Today the fourth grade rockstars worked on Achieve 3000. All rockstars in grade 4 must complete five Achieve articles a week. Achieve 3000 is an online instructional reading program designed to help students accelerate their literacy growth to become fluent readers. The program helps students become proficient readers in all academic subject areas. The students were also given their login information and passwords. They will receive a weekly Achieve 3000 grade. 

In Social Studies, the fourth grade rockstars learned about longhouses. Students designed their very own longhouses and included items that were used by the Haudenosaunee people in their drawings. Students also wrote a descriptive writing piece about a longhouse including what they might see, hear, smell, or touch. The rockstars produced some amazing art work and wonderful writing! Be sure to check your child's Google Classroom posts for his/her amazing work!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Hope everyone had a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving!

The fourth graders wrote their very own Thanksgiving Litany Prayers thanking God for whom and what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving. Their prayers were beautifully written. 

The fourth graders will now be preparing for the season of Advent during this Advent season. The students will be individually preparing a play/script on ways they can prepare for the season of Advent during Religion class this coming week.

The fourth graders completed their Niagara Falls Comic Strip Projects illustrating its benefits to New York State and its uses as a natural resource. The fourth graders included tourists discussing why Niagara Falls is such an important resource. Amazing work was produced!  Students also created their very own natural resources posters. A job well done by all of my fourth grade rockstars! 

Friday, December 4th is a half day. Dismissal is 11:20 am. We will be having Virtual Report Card Conferences. The report card conferences are from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. I am looking forward to meeting virtually with you. There will be a schedule for the zoom conferences posted right here on class pages this week. The zoom meetings will be scheduled in alphabetical order. The same zoom code will be utilized that the students use daily. Please be on time for the zoom meeting. Each meeting will last approximately 5 minutes.

Dear Parents,

Hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful fall weather! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued cooperation and assistance during these two months of school. In addition to learning fourth grade concepts, the fourth graders are busy learning and engaging in several online learning sites such as ReadWorks and Epic. Please make sure your child reads for a half an hour daily to increase reading comprehension and fluency. Reading will enable your child to excel in all academic subject areas. 

The fourth graders learned about the Beatitudes in Religion Class and completed a project. The students were asked to illustrate one of the Beatitudes and provide a description of how they live out this Beatitude in their daily lives. Be sure to check our Google Classroom post for the beautiful work the students produced! 

This Wednesday, October 28th and Thursday, October 29th will be a Halloween Dress Down Day and class activities. Students in Cohort A may arrive to school wearing a costume on Wednesday. Students in Cohort B may arrive to school wearing a costume on Thursday. No acessories or costume masks are to be worn on either day. No face paint, tinted hair, or fake nails are permitted. Students participating remotely must adhere to this policy as well. NO TREATS may be brought to school. The students may however, pack a healthy snack for lunch. Students working remotely may wear costumes both days if they wish to do so. Students in Cohorts A and B may wear costumes on both days, one in person and one day at home. Costumes are optional. 

On Wednesday and Thursday afternoon will we have a Halloween Fun Afternoon of Learning! The students will be able to engage in several fun activities centered around Halloween. Please make sure your child has colored pencils and/or crayons and white paper or construction paper handy. 

On Thursday, October 29th - the students will decorate their Halloween face masks in the afternoon. The Home School Association generously purchased individual Halloween masks. The students may wear the masks on Thursday and Friday as they are approved by the CDC. Parents of students who are completely remote, may call Mrs. Daly in the school office to arrange for a time to pick up their child's mask. Students in Cohort A will receive their masks on Wednesday. Students in Cohort B will receive their masks on Thursday. 

Friday, October 30th - will be a half day for K-8. Grade 4 will dismiss at 11:20 am. Cohort B will report to school. Friday will also be a Dress Down Day. No ripped jeans, leggings, or tight clothing may be worn whether it be remotely or in person. 

Please make sure your child arrives to school dressed in complete winter uniform, has all the necessary supplies - workbooks/notebooks to work productively (no black or blue pens - pencils only and two red pens for checking homework), and a package of loose leaf paper for assignments. As previously mentioned in my last email, Mrs. Ahern created the suggested supply list.
