Saint Gabriel School, a Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese of New York, was established in 1941. Since it is a religious school, Saint Gabriel’s provides its students with a full educational program in religious knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith and practice and prepares its students for the reception of the sacraments of the Roman Catholic faith.
The 2014-2015 enrollment was 228 students, aged 3 through 14.
Saint Gabriel School, a New York State accredited institution, also provides a full program of academic subjects for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8. SmartBoard™ technology is integrated in Grades PK4-8. Saint Gabriel School boasts of a modern Science/Math Lab and a renovated Library.
The Pre-Kindergarten program consists of two classes: three year olds, who meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 8:00-11:15 AM, and four year olds, who meet five days a week from 8:00 AM-2:45 PM. It is a parent-cooperative program. The average class size is 18 students, with a head teacher, a teacher’s aide, and the “parent-of-the-day”. Students participate in group and individual activities. Reading and math readiness, science, art and music, and socialization are stressed.
Kindergarten is a full day program with emphasis placed on reading and math readiness, science, physical education, art and music.
Grades 1-8 offer the student a rigorous program consisting of study in math, science, social studies, reading/literature, English language arts (writing, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary), Spanish, music, art, and physical education. Saint Gabriel School is in the process of revitalizing its technology program. Students in Grades 1-8 will be provided with individual Chromebooks. Grades 1-5 are self-contained classes, while Grades 6-8 are departmentalized.
After graduating from Saint Gabriel School, the students further their education at Catholic, private and public high schools throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Westchester.
The students are encouraged to “give back” to their community through various service opportunities: nursing home visits, canned food drives, mission appeals and an annual Basketball marathon which raises thousands of dollars for charitable organizations.
Saint Gabriel students also make time for fun. Halloween and Christmas parties, Walk-a-thon, Christmas Musical Show, Spring Musical, Sports Nights, and field trips are a few of the events for which the students eagerly await.
The Saint Gabriel Home School Association is very active, organizing many fun- and fund-raising events for adults and families: International Sunday, Harvest Social, Brunch with Santa, Valentine’s Dance, Latin Night, and Family Bingo.
