In Math we are learning ways to add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using a variety of mental math strategies. 

We are learning all about New York in Social Studies.

In Grammar, we are learning about sentences and sentence fragments.

In Religion, we are learning how to be followers of Christ. 

Please continue to work on DreamBox (5 lessons a week) and Achieve (five articles and five activities a week).

Please note that Dreambox is currently not operating effectively. Once DreamBox is up and running effectively again, the students may continue working on one lesson a day, five lessons a week. Points will not be deducted from your child's grade during the times DreamBox is not in operation.

In Math, we are learning how to constuct arguments utilizing what we know about place-value relationships. 

In Religion, we are learning about the Beatitudes and how we can live out the Beatitudes in our daily lives. In addition, students completed an art/writing project on the Beatitudes.

In Grammar, we are learning about sentences and sentence fragments.

We are currently working on daily writing prompts. This week's genre focuses on creative writing - fantasy. Upon completion, the students love to share their creative writing pieces with their class.

Dear Parents, 

Welcome to the fourth grade! I hope you and your children had a wonderful, safe, and enjoyable summer.

Wednesday, September 8th is the first day of school. It is a half day. Arrival time is 7:45 am. Dismissal time is 11:20 am. Thursday, September 9th and Friday, September 10th are full days. Dismissal for Thursday and Friday will be 2:20 pm. Since arrival and dismissal times are staggered during Phase One, arrival time is 7:45 am and dismissal time is 2:20 pm every day, unless indicated otherwise on the school calendar. 

Please also make sure your child arrives to school on Wednesday with the necessary school supplies and his/her summer reading assignment. The supply list and the summer reading assignment has been previously posted on class pages in June. Please see below for further reference.

Dear Parents,

Hope all is well. We hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend. We are grateful for all those who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedom and continue to pray for those who are serving in the military.                     

The fourth grade rockstars are currently participating in the Catapult/Title 1 Group Guidance session via zoom every Friday for six sessions. There are two more sessions left. Our goal is to continue to maintain the emotional health and well being of our school community.

The fourth grade rockstars participated in a virtual field trip hosted by the Circle in the Square Theatre Group. The students watched a performance of Peter Pan and wrote a critique of Peter Pan. The students included what they liked, did not like, and what they would have done differently or changed about Peter Pan. The students orally shared their written or typed critiques with the class. The next upcoming virtual field trip will occur on Monday, June 7th. The rockstars will be viewing The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. 

In Social Studies/ELA, we viewed The City of United States Virtual Field Trip. We took a "momumental journey around our nation's capital as we discovered, explored, and celebrated the history, culture, and significance of this beautiful city." The students were asked to write or type on Google Docs a written reflection including three interesting facts they learned about the virtual field trip, one landmark they would like to visit, and why they would like to visit the particular landmark mentioned. 

In Religion, the students are continuing to learn about the four parts of the Mass.

In Math, we are learning how to construct arguments using what they already know about fractions utilizing benchmark fractions, fraction strips, number lines, and area models.

In Spelling, we are learning about long e words containing the spelling patterns e, y, e-conconant-e, eo, i, and i-consonant-e. 

Tuesday, June 1st is Mr. Naccari's Birthday - Principal of Saint Gabriel's School. The rockstars wrote and designed Happy Birthday cards for Mr. Naccari (in the format of a friendly letter) to remember his special day.

Thursday, May 27th is a half day. Dismissal will be 11:20 am. There is no school on Friday, May 28th and Monday, May 31st. School resumes on Tuesday, June 1st.

Dear Parents,

Hope all is well. 

A great big thank you from the bottom of my heart for the very beautiful, creative, and lovely basket and individual gifts given to me for Teacher Appreciation Week from my fourth grade rockstars and parents. Many many thanks to my fourth grade rockstars and parents for remembering me. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity is so appreciated by me. Thank you again for remembering me during Teacher Appreciation Week. My heart is forever grateful.

MAP Testing will begin the week of May 17th. Further information will follow. All students regardless of their location, will take the Spring MAP Assessment in Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics. There are no opt outs permitted. The results of the Map Assessment will not be recorded on the children's cumulative record, nor do they result in grade level retention. Map Assessments allow teachers to assess the academic abilities and needs of all of our students. This allows teachers to plan for differentiated instuction. Please be make sure that your child's laptop is fully charged before the start of the school day, especially during the week of Map Testing. 

Saint Gabriel's Movie Night will be sponsored by the eighth grade on Friday, May 14th at 7:30 pm. The rain date is May 21st. Please see Mr. Naccari's email for further details. 

All students regardless of their location, are expected to be dressed in their complete school uniform each day.

The fourth grade rockstars will be taking the New York State Math Exam beginning next Tuesday, May 4th. Cohort B will take Session 1 of the New York State Math State Exam on Tuesday, May 4th. There will be no morning zoom on Tuesday. Students at home will be given assignments to complete via Google Classroom. On Wednesday, May 5th, Cohort A will take Session 1 of the New York State Math Assessment. Students at home will be given assignments to complete via Google Classroom.

In Science, Social Studies, and ELA, students learned about Earth Day, and illustrated three ways they can take care of our precious Earth. They also wrote a description detailing their amazing art work.

Hope all is well. Welcome back from what I hope was a restful Easter break for all. 

The Archdiocese, under the direction of the New York State Department of Education, has decided to move forward with the NYS ELA and Math Asseessments. Students will only be taking Part One of both assessments. The testing windows are as follows: 

ELA - April 19th - April 29th.
Mathematics - May 3rd - May 14th 

These are windows of time. You will be informed of the exact date once the exams are scheduled. Students in complete remote status will not be tested this year, as per the request of the Archdiocese.

Please see below for important information regarding the free Extended Learning Day program for students in grades K-8. If you feel your child may benefit from small group instruction to help them progress in all academic subject areas, you may want to look into this program. Please refer to the email Mr. Naccari sent all parents last week regarding this program. The enrollment form and further information are attached to that email. Parents of NYC students who attend an Archdiocese of New York Catholic School can enroll them in this FREE Extended Learning Day program for students in grades K-8 created to supplement each student’s learning experience.

Due to the unique circumstances of this school year, the program will take place in small groups after school or on Saturdays through remote learning. Sessions are designed to include a holistic experience for students composed of targeted math and literacy instruction as well as STEM and SEL activities to encourage personal growth in a collaborative virtual classroom.

Parents have the option of choosing one of the following:

• • Two 100 minute sessions after school
• OR
• • One 200 minute session on Saturdays

This opportunity is made available to all K-8 NYC ADNY students thanks to Title I and Title IV funding, along with grants and generous donors.

Dear Parents, 

Hope all is well. Happy March! The fourth grade rockstars have been learning a great deal. In Religion class, we are learning about the Lenten season and how we can grow closer to Jesus. The fourth graders illustrated and explained how they can grow closer to Jesus during this Lenten season. Their amazing art work is displayed in Google Classroom. Students have created their very own recipes to help others live out what Jesus has taught and showed us. Their amazing work is also displayed in Google Classroom. The fourth graders are also curently working on the final copy for the Christ is Alive! essay contest. Please check Google Classroom for submission due dates. Please be sure to check Google Classroom for the wonderful ongoing work produced by the fourth grade rockstars.

In Social Studies, the fourth graders are learning about The Five Nations. Students will engage in a fun art activity to create and design a flag to represent the League of Five Nations.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Hope all is well. The fourth grade rockstars had a very productive week. During the month of February, we celebrate Black History Month, Valentine's Day, President's Day, and Lunar New Year. To celebrate and honor Black History Month, the fourth grade rockstars learned about Martin Luther King Jr. via a Google Slides presentation presented on Google Classroom. Students were introduced to some of Dr. King's famous quotes from his "I Have a Dream" speech. Students chose one of their favorite King quotes, wrote about the meaning of the quote, and illustrated the quote they chose through art/comic strips. Students will present their art work to the class and tell how the quote they chose is depicted in their art work. Students also learned about Valentine's Day and President's Day. For Chinese New Year, students learned about its interesting history and created their very own Chinese lanterns. The students engaged in many fun activities on Friday. 

Many thanks to the fourth grade rockstars for their beautiful and heartfelt thank you cards to Mr. Vinny Gomez, who is the manager at Key Food Supermarket here in the Bronx. He posted his heartfelt thanks to the students and staff at Saint Gabriel's School for taking out the time to illustrate the beautiful thank you cards for himself and his staff. A big thank you to Mrs. Santos (mother of Nico Santos) for hand delivering the cards to Mr. Gomez. Another big thank you to Mrs. Graham (mother of Dylan Graham) for informing me of Mr. Gomez's Facebook post to share with all of you.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy February! Hope all is well. This week we will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week! On Thursday, February 4th, we will be having a Literacy Celebration. The Literacy Celebration will be ongoing throughout the day on Thursday, and will be scheduled around lunch and Music class. Students may bring in their favorite book (or have on hand if working remotely), and read to the class. The book chosen should be a simple picture book. If the book is a chapter book, a few pages may be read from the book. We will also engage in a fun activity to celebrate the importance of literacy. Some of the fourth grade parents will also be reading a book to the class via zoom! We are excited to listen to the wonderful readings tomorrow. Parents, please email me if you wish to read a book to the fourth grade rockstars. I will send you the zoom link with a scheduled time. We look forward to seeing and listening to you read a book via zoom! 

We will be working on the Second Annual Christ is Alive! Essay Contest this week as well. All of the instructions will be posted on Google Classroom for reference. Here is a sample of what the contest entails. 

The essay contest is open to students in grades 3 through 8 who are enrolled in a Catholic School or parish religious education. All they have to do is describe a moment they felt close to God. Only one page. Due Friday, March 12, 2021.

If a child in your school wins:

The winner receives $100 and a Bible.
The winner receives 20 copies of a book to distribute to his or her classmates:
Grades 3-5: Everyone Belongs, inspired by the Pastoral Letter against Racism.
Grades 6-8: Christ Is Alive! by Pope Francis.
The teacher or catechist gets $100 and a $100-credit at comcenter.com.
The parish or school gets $200 and a $200-credit at comcenter.com.

Over $10,000 in prizes will be awarded!  But more importantly, students who participate have a chance to proclaim the Good News that Christ Is Alive!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Happy New Year 2021! May this new year be filled with happiness, hope, healing, and peace. Wishing you all the very best this year.                      

A great big thank you from the bottom of my heart for the very generous money gift given to me for Christmas from the fourth grade parents. Many many thanks to my fourth grade rockstars for their beautiful, lovely, and generous Christmas gifts. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity is so appreciated by me. Thank you again for remembering me during the Christmas season.

Today the fourth grade rockstars worked on Achieve 3000. All rockstars in grade 4 must complete five Achieve articles a week. Achieve 3000 is an online instructional reading program designed to help students accelerate their literacy growth to become fluent readers. The program helps students become proficient readers in all academic subject areas. The students were also given their login information and passwords. They will receive a weekly Achieve 3000 grade. 

In Social Studies, the fourth grade rockstars learned about longhouses. Students designed their very own longhouses and included items that were used by the Haudenosaunee people in their drawings. Students also wrote a descriptive writing piece about a longhouse including what they might see, hear, smell, or touch. The rockstars produced some amazing art work and wonderful writing! Be sure to check your child's Google Classroom posts for his/her amazing work!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Hope everyone had a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving!

The fourth graders wrote their very own Thanksgiving Litany Prayers thanking God for whom and what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving. Their prayers were beautifully written. 

The fourth graders will now be preparing for the season of Advent during this Advent season. The students will be individually preparing a play/script on ways they can prepare for the season of Advent during Religion class this coming week.

The fourth graders completed their Niagara Falls Comic Strip Projects illustrating its benefits to New York State and its uses as a natural resource. The fourth graders included tourists discussing why Niagara Falls is such an important resource. Amazing work was produced!  Students also created their very own natural resources posters. A job well done by all of my fourth grade rockstars! 

Friday, December 4th is a half day. Dismissal is 11:20 am. We will be having Virtual Report Card Conferences. The report card conferences are from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. I am looking forward to meeting virtually with you. There will be a schedule for the zoom conferences posted right here on class pages this week. The zoom meetings will be scheduled in alphabetical order. The same zoom code will be utilized that the students use daily. Please be on time for the zoom meeting. Each meeting will last approximately 5 minutes.

Dear Parents,

Hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful fall weather! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued cooperation and assistance during these two months of school. In addition to learning fourth grade concepts, the fourth graders are busy learning and engaging in several online learning sites such as ReadWorks and Epic. Please make sure your child reads for a half an hour daily to increase reading comprehension and fluency. Reading will enable your child to excel in all academic subject areas. 

The fourth graders learned about the Beatitudes in Religion Class and completed a project. The students were asked to illustrate one of the Beatitudes and provide a description of how they live out this Beatitude in their daily lives. Be sure to check our Google Classroom post for the beautiful work the students produced! 

This Wednesday, October 28th and Thursday, October 29th will be a Halloween Dress Down Day and class activities. Students in Cohort A may arrive to school wearing a costume on Wednesday. Students in Cohort B may arrive to school wearing a costume on Thursday. No acessories or costume masks are to be worn on either day. No face paint, tinted hair, or fake nails are permitted. Students participating remotely must adhere to this policy as well. NO TREATS may be brought to school. The students may however, pack a healthy snack for lunch. Students working remotely may wear costumes both days if they wish to do so. Students in Cohorts A and B may wear costumes on both days, one in person and one day at home. Costumes are optional. 

On Wednesday and Thursday afternoon will we have a Halloween Fun Afternoon of Learning! The students will be able to engage in several fun activities centered around Halloween. Please make sure your child has colored pencils and/or crayons and white paper or construction paper handy. 

On Thursday, October 29th - the students will decorate their Halloween face masks in the afternoon. The Home School Association generously purchased individual Halloween masks. The students may wear the masks on Thursday and Friday as they are approved by the CDC. Parents of students who are completely remote, may call Mrs. Daly in the school office to arrange for a time to pick up their child's mask. Students in Cohort A will receive their masks on Wednesday. Students in Cohort B will receive their masks on Thursday. 

Friday, October 30th - will be a half day for K-8. Grade 4 will dismiss at 11:20 am. Cohort B will report to school. Friday will also be a Dress Down Day. No ripped jeans, leggings, or tight clothing may be worn whether it be remotely or in person. 

Please make sure your child arrives to school dressed in complete winter uniform, has all the necessary supplies - workbooks/notebooks to work productively (no black or blue pens - pencils only and two red pens for checking homework), and a package of loose leaf paper for assignments. As previously mentioned in my last email, Mrs. Ahern created the suggested supply list.
